Passengers Terrified As Massive Tarantulas Run Through Cabin

A word of warning to all you arachnophobes out there: I’d advise you not to read this article. Perhaps an article about a giant cuddly bunny might be more up your alley?

Still with me? Don’t say I didn’t warn you. In a scene fit for a horror film, an Air Transat flight between Punta Cana and Montreal was recently invaded by tarantulas between four to eight inches long. Flight attendants asked passengers to put on their shoes and cover their ankles while they attempted to round up the creepy critters.

Étienne Normandin, an entomologist at the University of Montreal, said the tarantulas were probably a species called Phormictopus cancerides, which is “aggressive, but the venom is not strong.” Normandin explained that since the market for these spiders is very lucrative, they were most likely hiding in a passenger’s luggage intended for resale.

While most passengers got away with little more than a fright, one woman was unlucky enough to experience a close encounter with one of the creatures. Flick over to the next page to hear exactly what happened.
