To us mere mortals, watching a gymnast is like watching a magician defy gravity and start to levitate in the air. They make their acrobatics look so easy that it’s sometimes easy to forget that they too can make mistakes. The following video shows a young gymnast making one such mistake, only to be spectacularly rescued by her extremely quick-thinking coach.
The video, which you can watch on the next page, sees 11-year-old Caidance performing her routine at Gym Magic Gymnastics Club in Canada. She was warming up to compete in the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Ontario Championships when she slipped on the bars and flew towards the mat.
Just a thousandth of a second before her head was about to hit the mat at a potentially damaging angle, her coach sprang into action and saved her. With a turn and flip, coach Vitali saved his student whilst somehow managing to make it look part of a routine.
