I’m sure by now you’ve all seen or heard about the young boy who fell into the gorilla enclosure at Cincinnati Zoo. Unbeknownst to his parents, the four-year-old crawled past a railing before falling 15 feet into the gorilla exhibit moat. In the chaos that followed, the gorilla, named Harambe, was fatally shot, despite witnesses claiming that the animal was merely protecting the boy.
This has led to many people criticising the boy’s parents on social media, claiming that their bad parenting led to the death of this beautiful animal. With the parents coming under severe fire, it has been touted that they could face criminal proceedings for their actions in the build-up to Harambe’s death. A petition has been set up online, with 306,505 people (at the time of writing) signing it to say that the parents of the boy should be held accountable for negligence.
So far it seems that the Cincinnati police have no plans to prosecute, but that could all change if the Hamilton County Prosecuting Attorney decides otherwise. Today the names of the boy’s parents have been released in the press, and it seems that between them they have a pretty chequered past.
