Muhammad Ali, the three-time world heavyweight champion died on Friday night in a Phoenix hospital after a long battle with Parkinson’s believed to be brought on by repeated blows to the head.
The 74-year old was admitted to hospital on Thursday suffering from a respiratory illness, a condition that was complicated by Parkinson’s.
“After a 32-year battle with Parkinson’s disease, Muhammad Ali has passed away at the age of 74. The three-time World Heavyweight Champion boxer died this evening,” Gunnell said in a statement.
“The Ali family would like to thank everyone for their thoughts, prayers, and support and asks for privacy at this time.”
A tweet on Ali’s official page posted a picture of the iconic sportsman and captioned it simply: “Muhammad Ali. 1942-2016.”
An Olympic champion and veteran of 61 heavyweight fights spanning three decades, in the ring Ali may be best known for his three epic bouts with longtime foil Joe Frazier, a brutal trilogy that left both fighters greatly diminished.
