Everyone’s favourite ginger singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran is currently enjoying a year off after five years of non-stop touring. However, he may have to return to the real world, as two songwriters have filed a copyright lawsuit against the A Team singer to the tune of $20m for his song Photograph.

Songwriters Martin Harrison and Thomas Leonard filed the lawsuit against Sheeran because they believe a song they wrote, titled Amazing, which was sung by X Factor winner Matt Cardle, has striking similarities. The complaint states that “The similarity of words, vocal style, vocal melody, melody, and rhythm are clear indicators, among other things, that Photograph copies Amazing.”

Harrington and Leonard are seeking statutory damages, as well as either an injunction or a running royalty for the allegedly stolen song. Head over to the next page to hear the two songs side by side, and make a judgement for yourself whether Ed Sheeran really has taken this amazing song as his literal inspiration.
