When Catherine Malatesta attended her junior prom at the age of 16 like any other teenager, the day was an important moment in her life. Although the same could be said for most 16-year-olds, Catherine’s prom was to be one of the most memorable moments in her life.
Her mother, Jennifer Goodwin, explained exactly how much the day meant to Catherine: “She turned to me and said, ‘Mom, for the first time in a long time, I actually feel beautiful.’ It was such a lovely moment and I was so happy that she felt like that for one day. It was a special, special night for all of us.”
Sadly, while Catherine was battling prom night nerves, she was also battling stage four cancer. She had been released from hospital for one night in order to attend prom and have the night of her life. After the event, she returned back to Boston Children’s Hospital where she died just three months later.
After her death, Catherine’s friends and family decided they wanted to remember her in an unconventional way: by making their very own “Sisterhood of the Traveling Prom Dress.”
