EURO 2016 is nearly upon us; and for all the football fans in the world it’s chance to celebrate the beautiful game on the world stage. With crazed European football supporters across the continent flocking to France for the start of the tournament, security fears couldn’t be further from their collective minds.
Sadly though, terrorism has reared it’s ugly head just days before the finals are due to commence. With the tournament kicking off on Friday in Paris, security services have been alerted, after a man was arrested with a “large cache of arms“.
Ukraine’s SBU security agency arrested a Frenchman, identified by French media as Gregoire M, who had reportedly planned 15 attacks driven by “ultra-nationalistic views”. Caught carrying 125kg of TNT, as well as guns and detonators, this French national was intent on causing serious injury while football fans enjoyed the euphoria of the tournament.
Understandably, the French people are already sensitive to the dangers of terrorism, after the November attacks in Paris and suicide bombers at the Stade de France. With that in mind, this is not welcome news for anyone connected to France or football.
With EURO 2016 bringing thousands of foreign nationals into the country, it seems that security forces will now be on the highest of alerts. More news on this as it breaks.
