In a story that has rocked the world of professional tennis, one of the game’s leading lights has been suspended for taking a banned substance. Former women’s world number one Maria Sharapova hasn’t played since January 2016, when she tested positive for meldonium – a substance that was banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) at the start of the year.
Since then the tennis world has been waiting to hear exactly what Sharapova’s punishment would be, if any. Now it seems the International Tennis Federation (ITF) has come to a decision over the Russian’s future, and it’s not good news for fans of the former Wimbledon champion.
Banned for two years, the ITF decided to backdate Sharapova’s suspension to January 2016, which was when the five time Grand Slam winner was originally busted. As you can expect, Sharapova has issued a statement on the punishment, which she has labelled as unfair. Flick over to the next page to read it in full.
