What Prince Thought Of His Infamous Chappelle’s Show Sketch

Since Prince’s tragic death last week, a whole host of memories and tributes have been pouring in for the late star. Anyone who was a fan of Chappelle’s Show back in the early 00s will remember the hilarious sketch in which comedian Charlie Murphy recounted a time he met Prince back in the 1980s.

The skit first aired in 2004, and revolves around a crazy basketball game that actually took place one night in the mid ’80s between Prince’s crew and Murphy’s buddies. It’s probably worth mentioning that Charlie Murphy is the older brother of Eddie Murphy, and got to hang around a lot of superstars when Eddie became famous.

Former Chappelle’s Show actor Donnell Rawlings played Murphy’s buddy in the famous Prince sketch. Since Prince’s death, Rawlings has opened up about Prince’s attitude towards the skit:

“He thought it was hilarious. And I think [Chappelle and Prince] really built a friendship after that sketch. Dave wanted Prince to be in the sketch, and he asked him about it, and Prince told Dave, ‘Yeah, nah.’ And that’s true to Prince’s fashion with dialogue. You’ll probably never hear of Prince talking more than three sentences.”

The sketch, which you can watch on the next page, became so well-known that people started to get Chappelle and Prince confused.

“Some people think Dave Chappelle is Prince. I’m pretty sure someone had to put out some disclaimer saying, ‘Dave Chappelle is not dead. Prince died.’ Prince is much larger than a sketch, but just showing what Chappelle’s Show did for the art form, when you mention Prince and his music, there is no way to get around that groundbreaking sketch.”
