TV weather reporters are famed for their lax approach to dress codes, with endless Youtube clips dedicated to wardrobe malfunctions of attractive young weather presenters from around the world. While we all love a bit of weather banter, it would seem one news station has taken things a step too far with an awkward on-air moment that has led to serious accusations of sexism.
Liberté Chan was presenting KTLA’s Saturday morning weather report when an unexpected cardigan appears to the right of the screen. The unplanned moment clearly takes Chan aback, to which she asks: “Why? Because it’s cold?” An off-camera male voice replies: “We’ve been getting a lot of emails.”
The emails contained comments like: “Liberté Chan’s dress is totally inappropriate for a Saturday morning news… looks like she didn’t make it home from her cocktail party last night.”
Another wrote: “Liberté Chan looks like she stayed out late at a party and came to work in the same dress. Not appropriate for a morning news weather report. The show’s producer should not have allowed her to do it in a cocktail dress. Handing her the sweater during her report was also in very poor taste.”
Not surprisingly, the incident, which you can watch on the next page, caused a barrage of tweets condemning the news station for blatant sexism. Many were quick to point out that a man would never be told to cover up in such a way.
