Back in the day, television commercials used to be a lot less politically correct than they are now. Considering that times have changed, the evolution of these commercials is unsurprising. However, it seems nobody gave China the memo that you can’t be outrageously offensive in 2016.
In a television commercial for washing detergent that can only be described as “shockingly racist”, we see a black man get “washed” until he turns Chinese. The advert strongly alludes to the idea that the man is more desirable to the female protagonist if he is Chinese and not black.
There is a widely acknowledged stereotype that Chinese people are racist towards black people in general, and although I don’t agree with it, this advert does nothing to dispel that idea. Flick over to the next page to see the offending footage in all its offensive glory.
