Starbucks is generally quite a depressing place. Every outlet looks the same, and is always filled with caffeine-addicted businesspeople who will not think twice about elbowing you if you get in between them and their 8am double shot expresso.

Which is why when Starbucks regular Ibby Piracha wrote a Facebook post about his incredible experience in his local shop, Starbucks haters around the world had some thinking to do.

As 23-year-old Ibby explained in his Facebook post, a barista passed a note to him that read: “I’ve been learning ASL (American Sign Language) just so you can have the same experience as everyone else.”

“Oh, I gotta love this place. Starbucks woman cashier, she wrote it to me and she knew I am deaf. I am surprised she learning sign language because I attend to Starbucks 3 times in a week,” he wrote.

“She asked me “what you want drink?” in sign language. I am so blessed with her. I think she realized Leesburg, VA have deaf people. Please share this post to everyone. I want hearing people would understand about hearing community supporting for the deaf community.”

In a phone interview with WJLA, conducted using a video relay interpreter, Piracha explained exactly how he felt about the barista’s next level customer service. “After I read the note, I looked at her and then she signed to me, ‘What would you like to order?’ I was totally shocked.”

“I was just so moved that, oh my gosh, she actually wanted to learn sign,” Piracha said. “She actually wanted to learn a different language … sign language is really a totally different language and it was something that she wanted to do because of me? Because I was a deaf customer? I was very, very impressed.”

The cashier explained to Ibby that she had been learning to sign from online Youtube videos. “I said Youtube? I was quite impressed,” Piracha said. “I was very inspired that she was very motivated to learn sign on her own. She became more motivated to learn sign because I was customer there and that has really, really touched me.”
