While it might seem like we are being needlessly morbid here, I assure you that we’re not. The only way to tackle hugely important issues like depression and suicide is to talk about them openly. It’s no secret celebrities have long been associated with these dark issues, mainly because of they live their lives at a frantic pace in front of the cameras.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re an actor, writer, poet, musician or politician, fame can be a fickle friend – as most of the people on this list found out. Suicide notes are just a sad by-product of suicide, and some of them can be utterly heartbreaking. Here are 27 haunting, profound and downright sad celeb suicide notes that will really hit you where it hurts.

1. Kurt Cobain

“Frances and Courtney, I’ll be at your altar. Please keep going Courtney, for Frances for her life will be so much happier without me. I LOVE YOU. I LOVE YOU.”

2. Virginia Woolf

“I feel certain I am going mad again. I feel we can’t go through another of those terrible times. And I shan’t recover this time. I begin to hear voices, and I can’t concentrate. So I am doing what seems the best thing to do.”

3. Adolf Hitler

Last words of Hitler’s political statement: “I die with a happy heart, aware of the immeasurable deeds and achievements of our soldiers…”

Last words of Hitler’s personal suicide note: “I myself and my wife – in order to escape the disgrace of deposition or capitulation – choose death. It is our wish to be burnt immediately…”

4. Hunter S. Thompson

“No More Games. No More Bombs. No More Walking. No More Fun. No More Swimming. 67. That is 17 years past 50. 17 more than I needed or wanted. Boring. I am always bitchy. No Fun for anybody. 67. You are getting Greedy. Act your old age. Relax–This won’t hurt.”

When I first read that note from Hunter S. Thompson, I was blown away. How someone can be so calm and eloquent moments before taking their own life is beyond me. On the next page we have another one of my favourite celebs… Robin Williams.
