For men, facial hair can be a fashion statement, an annoyance, or a favourite feature. But for women, facial hair is a forbidden fact that must be eliminated at the first opportunity. Be it plucking, waxing, shaving, or laser hair removal, there are endless ways women can spend hundreds of hours getting rid of the fuzz.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. One woman from Oregon has been taking a stand against the facial fuzz police, and after decades of embarrassment, is finally letting her natural facial hair grow wild and free.

Rose Geil, 39, first noticed the excess hair sprouting from her face, back and chest when she was just 13. She immediately began shaving the hair, which became a ritual she would feel trapped by for over 25 years. She was so embarrassed by the hair that she kept it a complete secret from her friends, refusing invites to sleepovers and getting up extra early to have time to shave.

She explained: “I didn’t realise the emotional impact until I was older. I just thought it was regular teen angst when I was young. My friends did not know, I hid it very well. It was exhausting trying to keep it hidden. I was emotionally drained from trying to hide my beard every day and feeling like I was failing miserably.”

After a while, it got to the point that Rose was so tired of shaving that she simply refused to leave the house. Then, eight months ago, she made the decision to put down the razor and let it all hang out. Head over to the next page to see the effects of her incredible decision.
